In Japan there are vending machines on almost every street corner, even in the middle of nowhere they are to be found. Over time, the machines and their environment are merging. During my journeys in Japan I became fascinated by those machines and their suroundings. I photographed a lot of them.

Several projects have developed from this fascination. The first one is a book that features 90 photographs of my favorite vending machines.

In 2019 I had the honor to exhibit my photographs and my book at Nippon Connection the Japanese Filmfestival in Frankfurt.

After my second trip to Japan in 2020 I started an Instagram account for The Automated Landscape. On this account I shared a lot of photos that did not find a place in the book. And of course the new photos of vending machines I took during that trip.
